REVIEW by Lorna: Sustained (Legal Briefs #2) by Emma Chase (@EmmaChse , @Mollykatie112)

SustainedEmma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

I pulled this out of my to be read pile after Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer blog, put this on her list of top ten romances that she read this year. She hasn’t steered me wrong yet and this book was no exception. This is book two of the series and I haven’t read book one, but this book can totally stand alone.

Jake is a total womanizer. The love them and leave them type. Although it’s not love, it’s one night stands only. And after he gets what he wants, he’s not a nice guy. I really kind of hated him at first. After getting mugged by a nine year old, he meets the boy’s guardian, Chelsea. She’s a breath of fresh air to him. She has given up graduate school after her brother and sister-in-law were killed in a car accident. She is now guardian to her brother’s six children, ages baby to fourteen. She’s the girl he can’t get his mind off of and he finds himself getting involved in the family’s life. Since he’s a lawyer, he is able to help when some of the children get into trouble. The problem here is that Jake doesn’t want marriage or a ready made family. He’s on track to make partner and that’s his only focus.

The story is told from Jake’s prospective which I find pretty unusal in the romance world-although this author’s,Tangled, was written that way as well. The characters are so well written that you could tell me a characteristic of one of the children and I could tell you which one it’s about. Six children in a book? Usually I would lose who was who along the way. Not so here and I loved that about the story. The children are a big part of this read and the author doesn’t shy away from them to only write the romance. The children added humor, emotion and depth to this read. They are all grieving their parents death, and Jake is just the man for them to focus all their energy and love on. Chelsea is the perfect match for Jake. She’s beautiful, smart, and loves the children with her whole heart. And she loves Jake the same way.

Not only was this a very sexy romance, but it was a heartwarming read as well. It’s an adult read so even though it’s about a family, it’s not a young adult read. The reader gets to see Jake fall in love with not only Chelsea, but with each member of the family. We also get to see Jake fight it every step of the way. I loved the romance, the characters, the humor, and the all around feel of this book and I would definitely put it on my list of top romances I read in 2015.
