REVIEW by Jena: Beautiful Demons (Peachville High Demons Book 1) by Sarra Cannon (@sarramaria)

In Peachville, even the cheerleaders have a dark side…

Harper Madison isn’t like other girls. She has extraordinary powers, but her inability to control them has gotten her kicked from so many foster homes she’s lost count. Shadowford Home for Girls is her last chance, and she hopes Peachville High will be the fresh start she needs.

But when evidence ties her to the gruesome murder of a Demons cheerleader, Harper discovers this small town has a big secret.

Beautiful Demons was a book that I stumbled across while perusing the free Kindle books on the Kindle store.  Honestly (and yes, I am aware that this is TOTALLY horrible!), I fell in love with the cover art and decided to give it a shot.  I thought worst case, I don’t like it and I click delete.  No big deal.  Well, I am happy to report that this was not the case.

I instantly took pity on the main character.  At the opening of this book, she has no idea what has been happening in her life aside from a long series of inexplicable events that have all been pinned on her.  She’s labeled as a bad seed because of it and she’s losing hope.  The author has written Harper in such a way that you just want to pull her out of the book and give her a big hug.  She’s totally likeable.

The plot of this book is a wonderful idea.  It’s dark and edgy but still written light enough that it rings slightly of a cross between the old Fear Street novels by R.L. Stine crossed with Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer hijinx.  We’ve got an easy to read novel thrown in with a heaping dose of the supernatural.  For the parents out there with creepy kids like mine that love suspenseful books, this would be a perfect one for them.  I would say the appropriate age group for this book would be early-mid teens.  However, I am 31 and I enjoyed the book thoroughly.

The themes of the book get a little dark in this one too.  Again, think Fear Street Super Chillers by R.L. Stine.  We are not talking guts and gore but there’s some blood and a corpse or two.  *wink wink*

The pace of this book is what I loved most.  The book moves very fast but nothing about it feels rushed.  Nothing feels out of place or crammed in awkwardly to move the plot along.  Very well written and full of twists and turns.  If you had a solid couple hours to sit and read, you’d blow through this one in no time.

Beautiful Demons is actually a part of a series.  This first installment is free on Amazon right now and you better believe I am going to buy the rest of the series.  A good, solidly written quick read.  Not earth shaking material but highly entertaining.  Overall, I give Beautiful Demons 4 creepy little demons!
